The Elements of Innovation Discovered

Cyclic expands to Europe with SYNETIQ deal

Metal Tech News - August 14, 2024

Brings its recycling technology to U.K.'s leading integrated vehicle salvage and recycling firm.

As part of its strategy to advance sustainable recycling practices, Cyclic Materials has signed a collaboration agreement with SYNETIQ, the U.K.'s leading vehicle salvage and recycling company, to recover rare earth elements from electric and hybrid vehicle motors.

"This relationship marks Cyclic Materials first overseas feedstock contract, a significant milestone as we continue to expand our business from North America across Europe in the months ahead," said Patrick Nee, Cyclic Materials co-founder and senior vice president of strategic partnerships. "Partnering with SYNETIQ was a clear decision, as both companies are committed to circular alternatives, specifically for electric motors."

Receiving a significant endorsement from tech giant Microsoft in mid-July, Cyclic has quickly expanded its operations by bringing its proprietary recycling technology overseas.

At the heart of the company's mission to create a sustainable circular economy are its Mag-Xtract and REEPure technologies, cutting-edge processes that enable the efficient recycling of not only rare earth elements but also copper, aluminum, steel, cobalt, and nickel from end-of-life products.

This commitment to innovation and sustainability is echoed by SYNETIQ, whose expertise in vehicle salvage and recycling complements Cyclic's technological advancements. Together, they will focus on extracting and processing critical minerals from electric motors, an essential step in driving the circular economy forward in both the automotive and electronics industries.

"This agreement represents a notable step forward in our mission to advance sustainable solutions for rare earth recycling to drive the circular economy forward across the globe," said Nee. "Together, we are committed to accelerating industry-wide change in how electric motors are recycled."

The collaboration not only solidifies Cyclic Materials' presence in Europe but also underscores the importance of partnerships in driving the circular economy. By joining forces, Cyclic Materials and SYNETIQ are setting a new standard for the recycling industry, with a focus on sustainability and innovation that resonates across the automotive sector and beyond.

"We are excited to announce SYNETIQ's new collaboration with Cyclic Materials," said Michael Hill, commercial director at SYNETIQ. "At the core of our circular model, this agreement exemplifies our commitment to sustainability, innovation, and responsible practices."

Under the initial agreement, Cyclic's proprietary Mag-Cycle and REEPure technologies will be used to process feedstock received from SYNETIQ's salvage and dismantling yards.

The magnets separated from end-of-life electric motors will be converted into mixed rare earth oxides, cobalt-nickel hydroxides, and other raw materials at Cyclic Materials' "spoke" facility, before being further refined at its Hub100 plant in Canada.
