The Elements of Innovation Discovered
Metal Tech News - August 12, 2024
To accelerate the development of technologies that will help global mining companies achieve their climate goals, ABB and Komatsu are collaborating on the development of technologies to reduce and eventually eliminate the need for diesel to fuel the heavy machinery that does the digging and hauling at mines around the world.
Under a strategic agreement, ABB and Komatsu will combine their expertise in electrification, automation, and heavy equipment to create world-class zero-emission solutions, from renewable energy generation to fully electrified mining equipment.
"We're pleased to embark on this collaboration with ABB and are excited to leverage one another's industry leading products and technological expertise to help move mining operations toward net-zero emissions, empowering a sustainable future where people, business, and the planet thrive together," said Dan Funcannon, senior vice president of surface haulage at Komatsu.
Recognizing that mining companies are at various stages when it comes to implementing net-zero solutions at their global operations, ABB and Komatsu are focusing on haulage, loading, and auxiliary equipment. With this strategic approach, the companies aim to build a comprehensive portfolio of production and support equipment to accelerate adoption into mining operations.
"By working together, we will tackle electrification and make a revolutionary difference to the way mining companies operate their sites in the near future," said Joachim Braun, president of ABB's process industries division. "We recognize the strategic importance of this agreement and believe there will be mutual business benefits and potential technology solutions for the mining market. Collaboration across the industry has already been proven to enable real and faster progress and we look forward to driving what happens next."
These collaborations include ABB's partnership with MEDATech Engineering Services Ltd. to develop an automated, fast-charging system for mining haul trucks. A high-power charging system that automatically connects to equipment without any human intervention, the ABB eMine FastCharge system is designed to significantly reduce the time and increase the safety of charging battery-operated mining machinery.
The ABB eMine Robot Automated Connection Device, which is planned to be a fully automated interoperable connection for FastCharge, will be on display at the Komatsu MINExpo 2024 exhibit at booth 7132 in the Central Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center from Sept. 24-26.
ABB, a global mining technologies company that has been electrifying the mining sector for more than 130 years, will be showcasing its world-class electrification, automation, and digital solutions for 21st century mines at booth 8601 in the Central Hall of MINExpo International 2024.
