Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA), a leading electric vehicle manufacturer and part of the Stellantis group of companies, has entered into an offtake agreement for battery-grade graphite produced by Westwater Resources Inc. in Alabama.
Stellantis – the world's fourth-largest automaker by sales in 2023, behind Toyota, Volkswagen Group, and Hyundai Motor Group – designs, manufactures, and sells Abarth, Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, Citroën, Dodge, DS, Fiat, Jeep, Lancia, Maserati, Opel, Peugeot, Ram, and Vauxhall automotive brands.
In support of new electrified models manufactured under the Stellantis banner, Westwater's primary Kellyton Graphite Processing Plant under construction in Alabama will deliver graphite anode material to FCA's battery partner plants in the U.S.
"We are honored to partner with one of the world's leading manufacturers of EVs and to assist FCA in securing a U.S.-based supply chain for natural graphite anode material," said Westwater Resources Executive Chairman Terence Cryan.
While exact quantities were not specified, Westwater says FCA has agreed to purchase a percentage of its battery-grade graphite anode requirements from Kellyton.
At over $120 million into its Kellyton plant and with this and the additional offtake agreement with SK ON, Westwater has now secured agreements for 100% of its phase-one capacity.
"Our team has worked hard to establish itself as an industry leader in the supply of U.S.-produced natural graphite, and we remain focused on securing additional supply agreements for our expanded Phase 2 volume," Jon Jacobs, Westwater's chief commercial officer.
Westwater's Coosa Graphite project in Alabama hosts the most advanced natural flake graphite deposit in the contiguous U.S., covering 41,965 acres in Coosa County.
