The Elements of Innovation Discovered

Electric Porsches to be unveiled at SXSW

Metal Tech News - February 28, 2024

The all-electric Taycan and Macan will take center stage at technology, arts, and culture festival in Austin, Texas.

Returning to Austin for its third year at South by Southwest arts and tech festival, Porsche will spotlight three new all-electric options – the Taycan Turbo S, Macan 4 and Macan Turbo. Porsche is committed to increasing the sales of electric vehicles, stating that it expects to make more than 80% of its sales EVs by 2030. These well-publicized goals by such a well-known luxury car brand could increase the sales of electric cars overall.

Porsche's immersive, speakeasy-inspired exhibit that celebrates the past, present and future will be open to the public from March 8 – 12 in downtown Austin, marking the U.S. reveal of the new all-electric Taycan and Macan.

"South by Southwest is the perfect setting to unveil the new all-electric Taycan and Macan in the U.S.," said Ayesha Coker, vice president of marketing for Porsche Cars North America. "The festival draws attendees from countless industries who celebrate new tech and innovation, and we can't wait to show off our latest developments in electrification. We hope guests enjoy seeing the new Taycan and the Macan for the first time, and come take part in our immersive installation, which will include daily panel discussions with our brand partners."

All-electric Taycan

Porsche is giving the all-electric Taycan an extensive update for its 2025 model year with more power, greater range, quicker acceleration, and faster charging.

The new Taycan Turbo S sedan, which will be on display, offers the fastest Porsche 0–60 time of just 2.6 seconds.

The updated version of the sporty electric sedan also charges at 800-volt DC charging stations with up to 320 kilowatts under ideal conditions. (50 kW more than before.) The fast-charging window of the new performance battery has been significantly expanded; high charging capacities can be sustained for longer, even at lower temperatures.

Also coming standard is a 150 kW DC/DC converter to improve charging speeds on 400-volt networks. This can reduce the time required to go from 10% to 80% charge compared to its predecessor. Under optimum conditions, the updated Taycan takes just 18 minutes to charge.

The new battery pack features a higher nickel content that keeps dimensions consistent with the outgoing unit while still significantly increasing capacity. Because of this, Porsche says the new Performance battery weighs 19 pounds less. Despite more standard offerings, the overall curb weight for the Turbo S comes in at roughly 33 pounds less.

Powertrain efficiency and the larger battery packs have improved range, too.

"Our experience with the rear-drive prototype with the larger battery suggested that it would achieve around 320 miles in our real-world 75 mph range test," reported Car and Driver.

Macan 4 and Macan Turbo

The internal-combustion Macan SUV has been Porsche's best-selling vehicle since 2016, and now, ten years after its initial unveiling, the compact luxury crossover has spawned an all-electric version for the 2024 model year with characteristic Porsche performance and range suitable for everyday use and practicality. (The Macan EV promises significantly more range than the Taycan, and while the Turbo model of the SUV offers up to 630 horsepower, the entry-level Macan 4 is the one that will likely offer the most driving range.)

Bearing the Macan nameplate, this electric SUV provides the same combination of sporty driving dynamics and upscale cabin as its gas-powered sibling while sharing a new platform with the upcoming Audi A6 e-tron. The Macan EV's dual-motor powertrain produces up to 630 horsepower in the top-level Turbo model, giving the crossover rapid acceleration.

Utilizing an 800-volt electrical architecture allows the Macan EV to charge from 10 to 80% in as little as 21 minutes on a DC fast charging connection, according to the automaker. The Macan 4 and Turbo aim to fulfill the demands of SUV drivers with top e-performance such as Launch Control – the Macan 4 produces up to 300 kW (402 horsepower) of overboost, while the Macan Turbo generates up to 470 kW (630 horsepower).

The Macan 4 accelerates to 60 miles per hour in 4.9 seconds from a standstill, while the Macan Turbo only takes 3.1 seconds. The two models achieve top track speeds of 136 and 161 mph and maximum torque of 479 and 833 lb-ft, respectively, during strong acceleration.
