The Elements of Innovation Discovered
Boasts highest-in-class horsepower at lower costs, emissions Metal Tech News - June 30, 2023
Leveraging its world-class heavy equipment and technology expertise, Komatsu has introduced the 980E-5SE, which boasts the highest-in-class horsepower available on an ultra-class mining truck.
Given the stringent nature of weight to energy consumption, mining haul trucks may be the perfect model to work out the heavy-duty kinks in electric components – if it can run a vehicle expected to operate at 1.4 million pounds (635,029 kilograms), you can be pretty confident the part is worth its price.
Engineered to promote increased productivity and a reduced carbon footprint, the 980E-5SE's electric drive means fewer mechanical components, less maintenance, and potentially reduced lifecycle costs.
Cranked up to a whopping 4,400 horsepower, nearly 1,000 more horses than leading electric drivetrains, the latest showing by Komatsu offers increased speed while hauling 363 metric tons up steep grades while climbing out of deep mining pits.
These are crucial factors for surface mining operations looking to reduce carbon dioxide emissions while keeping up with increasing global demands for metals.
Durability is also key for a mining truck with the hauling capacity of the 980E-5SE. Developed using advanced computer-aided design, finite element analysis, and full-scale dynamic testing, the frame of Komatsu's new electric drive truck is verified to carry its rated payload with the utmost structural reliability.
Adding a touch of comfort for the long hauling hours, Komatsu has opted to include automotive-style cruise control governing acceleration and deceleration to help operators maintain a constant speed and prevent "gas" pedal desensitization while being able to stay concentrated on steering and situational awareness.
State-of-the-art traction control technology that detects and corrects wheel spin or slide events and engages automatically and independently of the service brakes helps operators stay on task and operate more efficiently, even in slippery conditions, with better confidence.
For the finishing touches, to support increased production and optimized payload, Komatsu's Payload Meter IV helps maximize cycle efficiency to reduce the machine's life cycle costs.
Standard on Komatsu mining trucks, PLM IV tracks and records key production parameters, including payload weight, empty carry weight, haul cycle time, average speed, and much more.
With a truck that can compare and even surpass some of its fossil fuel-powered predecessors, Komatsu has released a behemoth that sets it apart from the competition.
