The Elements of Innovation Discovered

RecycLiCo achieves 99% recovery from LFP

Patented process effective for lithium-iron-phosphate batteries Metal Tech News – August 31, 2022

RecycLiCo Battery Materials Inc., in partnership with Kemetco Research Inc., has announced over 99% lithium recovery from its lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery cathode materials process during bench-scale tests.

Since 2016, RecycLiCo has facilitated up to 100% extraction of valuable battery materials from nickel-rich, manganese-rich, cobalt-rich, and now LFP cathode chemistries. As all these battery chemistries contain lithium, which has seen a more than 350% increase in price year-over-year due to the ongoing clean energy transition, attention to offsetting the costs and resources for electric vehicles and clean energy generation has possibly become the great race of the 21st century.

According to Benchmark Mineral Intelligence, China's forecasted share of LFP cathode production in 2022 is 99%.

To capture a North American and comprehensive battery recycling market share in the near and long terms, RecycLiCo has continued to position itself as an innovation-driven company that aims to provide a robust and complete solution for various lithium-ion battery chemistries.

"Despite the changing composition and exclusion of nickel, manganese, and cobalt in the cathode – lithium remains a core element in the lithium-ion battery and a significant value driver for efficient and environmentally friendly recycling processes that can achieve high-extraction of lithium," said Zarko Meseldzija, chief technology officer of RecycLiCo Battery Materials. "I believe we have a lot of momentum going our way with the ongoing demonstration plant project testing scaled-up operating conditions of our process in addition to our continuous innovation in several battery recycling-related topics."

With a recent life cycle assessment being completed earlier this year to verify the impact of the company's recycling technology as both incredibly efficient and environmentally friendly, RecycLiCo has certainly lived up to the standards it has set for itself.
